Soil pits allow us a glimpse into the past, and at the same time a snapshot of current conditions. Digging down through the different layers of sediment reveals the geological timeline of that particular place. Standing inside the pit allows soil scientists to identify the different horizons and take soil samples for analysis of nutrients and composition.
